The Kearney School District Board of Education met on Wednesday, July 15, for its regular monthly business meeting at the Kearney Administrative Office.

The Board received an update on 2022 bond projects scheduled for this summer, including roofing work at Southview Elementary and Kearney High School, exterior wall work at Kearney Middle School, flooring projects at Hawthorne Elementary and Kearney Elementary, a grease trap replacement and collaboration wall removal at Hawthorne, and sheetrock wall repairs in the KMS small gym. These projects are part of KSD’s continued work to maintain safe, functional and high-quality learning environments for students and staff.

The Board also reviewed the June 2026 financial reports. The district’s year-end operating fund cash balance was reported at 18.85%, and the report noted that the district’s current combined actual revenue and expense percentages remained close to prior-year levels.

During action items, the Board approved an agreement with ExcellenceK12 to conduct community research that will help inform future decisions about long-range facility needs and potential budget options. The project will include 300 telephone interviews with randomly selected adults, online surveys for parents, staff and community members, analysis of findings, an executive summary, a digital dashboard and a presentation to the Board.

The Board also approved an amendment with Hollis + Miller for building assessments. This work will help the district better understand current facility conditions and needs as part of its long-range planning process.

Additional action included approval of exterior repairs to the district office building through Tice Exteriors, as well as ratification of additional summer work by McConnell & Associates to address drainage, sidewalk and storm drain needs at Kearney Middle School and Dogwood Elementary.

The Board approved revised salary schedules designed to strengthen market competitiveness, and employee recruitment and retention. The updates include additional steps on the Classified and Professional/Administrative salary schedules, a longevity stipend on the Miscellaneous salary schedule and changes to the Extra Duty salary schedule to bring compensation for fine arts and cheer/dance in line with other programs.

The Board also approved updates to the district’s facilities rental agreement and approved bus routes for the 2026-2027 school year. Durham Transportation may make adjustments after school begins and full transportation needs are known.
