Counseling Services

A montage of diverse children and teenagers smiling in a brightly lit indoor setting.

Kearney School District’s school counselors help students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and prepare for life beyond graduation.

Our comprehensive school counseling program provides developmentally appropriate support from elementary school through high school. Counselors work in partnership with students, families, teachers, administrators and community organizations to promote academic achievement, personal and social growth, career awareness and future readiness.

How School Counselors Support Students

Depending on students’ ages and individual needs, counseling services may include:

  • Classroom and small-group lessons
  • Short-term individual counseling and check-ins
  • Academic planning and goal-setting
  • Social and emotional skill development
  • Conflict resolution and relationship skills
  • Career awareness and exploration
  • Course selection and graduation planning
  • College, career, military and workforce preparation
  • Support during school and grade-level transitions
  • Crisis response and safety planning
  • Referrals to district and community resources

KSD’s program reflects the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program, which supports students through counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and collaboration with school staff, families and the community.

Support at Every Stage

  • Elementary counselors help students build a strong foundation for learning and healthy relationships. Their work may focus on self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, friendship skills, responsible decision-making, problem-solving and successful transitions between grade levels.

  • As students become more independent, counselors help them navigate academic expectations, changing relationships and the personal and social challenges of adolescence. Students also begin exploring their interests, strengths, career possibilities and future educational options.

  • High school counselors assist students with academic and graduation planning while helping them prepare for their next steps. This includes course selection, career pathways, internships, dual-credit opportunities, college and technical-school planning, scholarships, financial aid, military options and entry into the workforce.

Supporting Student Well-Being

Clay County Children's Services FundKearney School District is grateful for the support of the Clay County Children’s Services Fund, which helps us provide a broad range of social, emotional and behavioral health services for students.

This funding supports individual and group therapy, including art and music therapy, specialized behavioral services and the Signs of Suicide prevention program. It also helps provide character education, staff professional development and helps our schools to identify concerns earlier and connect students with appropriate support.

The Clay County Children’s Services Fund has been an invaluable partner in helping KSD meet the needs of thousands of students and support their well-being, growth and long-term success.
