The Kearney School District Board of Education approved Katelyn Birchfield, Kearney High School physical education teacher, for the 2017-2018 head softball coach position. Birchfield has spent the past three years teaching and coaching for Kearney High School. She has served as the junior high assistant track coach and the assistant softball coach throughout that time.

Kearney High School Athletic Director, Eric Marshall, stated,” Coach Birchfield’s background as a softball player is a great asset to our athletes. She has done an excellent job as the head assistant and is ready to take over the head coaching position. We are excited to have her in this new role.”

With more than a decade of experience playing competitive softball including college ball, Birchfield has a long history of experience on the field. She played softball for Pittsburg State University for four years earning many honors including being named the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete. Her experience as a player led her to her passion for coaching. As a volunteer in 2013, Birchfield began her first softball coaching position while student-teaching at Belton Middle School. In 2014 she accepted her teaching and coaching positions for Kearney School District.

“I am very excited about becoming the head softball coach here at Kearney. I hope to continue to grow the program and build strong relationships with my athletes and the community,” said Birchfield. “My hope for the future is to not only have my athletes be successful on the field but also in life. I know I have big shoes to fill, but I believe I am up to the challenge and can’t wait to get started.”

Birchfield attended Pittsburg State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. She is also currently working on her Master in Educational Technology degree from the University of Central Missouri.

Birchfield will start her new role at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. She replaces Paul Lorbert who announced his retirement after teaching and coaching since he started with KSD in 2000.
