Annette Shelton Named New Principal for Hawthorne Elementary

The Kearney School District Board of Education approved Annette Shelton for the 2017-2018 Hawthorne Elementary principal position. Shelton is currently the assistant principal at Kearney Middle School. She has spent the past 16 years in either a teacher or administrator role for the Kearney School District.

Kearney School District Superintendent, Dr. Bill Nicely, stated, “Annette is a proven leader within our district, and her passion for elementary level education is evident when you talk to her. We look forward to seeing the great work she will do at Hawthorne in collaboration with school staff members.”

With 23 years of experience, Shelton has displayed her dedication to the education field. She started her teaching career in 1994 when she accepted a position as a fifth grade teacher for the North Kansas City School District. She was with the district as an elementary teacher for six and a half years. In 2001, Shelton started her career in Kearney as an elementary school teacher. For the next six years she continued to teach elementary students as a third and fifth grade teacher and a computer teacher. In 2007 Shelton was hired as the principal for Holt Elementary. She became the assistant principal for Kearney Middle School in 2008 and has been in that position for the past eight years.

“It has been my dream to return to the elementary level. I am honored to be chosen to become a part of the dedicated Hawthorne Elementary team,” said Shelton. “I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the staff to continue making Hawthorne an excellent place to educate our students.”

Shelton attended William Jewell College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She also holds a Master of Arts in Education from Baker University as well as an Education Specialist in Administration degree from William Woods University.

She and her husband Jimmy have two children, Mary-Kate and Emilee.

Shelton will start her new role at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. She replaces Sandy Peitzman who will retire after 29 years with Kearney School District, 11 years as the Hawthorne Elementary principal.
